Community Capacity Building - what is it?!

By anon - Posted on 02 November 2007

According to the Charity Commission, community capacity building is developing the capacity and skills of the members of a community in such a way that they are better able to identify, and help meet, their needs and to participate more fully in society.

So what does this have to do with my job role - it has absolutely everything to do with my job role!  I've come across the term before, but now that it is core to my role, I am able to appreciate the intricacies of it and that it is more than just pointing an organisation in the right direction.  Capacity building is like an adult holding a toddler's hand or holding the bike until the child can balance themselves.

Since my previous post, I have decided that it is pointless to try to understand the complexities of the voluntary sector even if I remain a voluntary sector newbie for a little longer!  It is more important to become aware of what is available out there to help these "child" organisations who are finding it difficult to secure funding.  It's also about providing an environment for them to air their views and themselves gain a better understanding of the voluntary sector through networking.

18 days on from my first post, I have a clearer set of goals and a better (more realistic) sense of direction of how I need to "travel" in the next few months in this job role.  I'm still finding it challenging as I attend meetings hoping that people don't notice me being a newbie, but it is all part of capacity builiding Hardeep to help Hardeep to community capacity build - what do YOU think?
